Tennis Club News The web site for UK tennis clubs
Introducing www.tennisclubnews.co.uk, one of two new websites recently launched by us, has been well received.
Campaigners are still fighting to prevent the Swansea Tennis Centre from being closed by the council. They are preparing a business plan to fight off the decision of the Swansea Council to withdraw their £120,000 funding of the centre and the LTA is supporting them by offering to match the funds they generate.
Slough indoor tennis complex is being converted by Slough Borough Council into a bowling alley as it has allegedly lost as a tennis facility, £30,000 since 2000!
Again, shouldn’t the LTA be stepping in to keep facilities like this open? In this instance, it would be about £3k a year!
In contrast, including ‘funding’ from the LTA, Weymoth is receiving £1million for a new state-of-the-art centre at Wey Valley School and Sports College, and another £2.2million is going to Telford & Wrekin Council for a new Sports and Learning Community at Oakengate while Westward Ho! Tennis Club has been refused plans for a new £2.5 million sports complex by the town planners.
A few clubs have been awarded Clubmark status which promotes the performance side of play.

Editorial Comment
LTA in denial
“The LTA are in denial” was the comment by a member of the media as we left a hastily called press conference where Nigel Sears and Leon Smith, the respective heads of the women’s and men’s game at Roehampton, attempted to counter the critical reports which appeared in the Wednesday morning papers.
It was the day after Britain saw all their players, bar Andy Murray, the fourth seed, wave goodbye to The Championships which by all accounts, is the worst performance recorded by the Brits in 133 years.
In addition, this year was the first year that no English player featured in the Men’s singles draw. For the record the two that did appear were from Scotland.
History now shows that seven home-bred players failed to clear their respective first round hurdle, and though there were some fighting performances, the end result was disappointing and as far as the press were concerned, do not represent ‘value for money’ bearing in mind how much is invested into the sport by Wimbledon, the Government and sponsors.
But the LTA don’t see it that way. According to Steven Martens speaking shortly after the last departure, it was disappointing. “I would say, for me, it is not a reflection of British tennis. British tennis is much stronger than this,” he declared at the time.
Without going into the details of each match, there were several occasion were the British players seemingly stood on the brink of victory only to succumb to pressure of a possible win!
Former Wimbledon champion Maria Bueno was heard to comment on learning of these disappointing results, that the Brits hadn’t been taught how to win and it is difficult to disagree with that. She added that the coaches who train them, were also unaware of how to close out a match when the pressure was on.
As Andy Murray, our only bright light in the gloom of British tennis said, “It's not great, is it? A few of the girls had a chance to win and didn't quite take them.”
Fortunately for the LTA, Murray’s run took the pressure off as did the performance of our junior players which augurs well for the future but then, haven’t we heard that a few times before over the past decades!
All that is doing is delaying the inevitable inquisition into the state of the British game and no doubt the full force of the Media will be aimed at the governing body over the coming weeks, especially if we are relegated into the bottom division of the Davis Cup the week after Wimbledon!
